Some of the samples taken from the Thiruvananthapuram district were sent to the National Institute of Virology for investigation. Examination of samples in the lab revealed 11 samples were Zika virus-positive.



How is the Zika virus spread?

The Zika virus is spread by mosquito bites that are more active during the day. The virus was first observed in monkeys in Uganda in 1947. It then spread to Tanzania in 1952.


Symptoms of Zika virus

- Fever

- Red rashes

- headache

- Muscle pain

- Pain in the joints


Symptoms appear 3 to 4 days after the Zika virus enters the body. However, some people do not even have symptoms. Doctors at Thiruvananthapuram Hospital said the Zika virus was not fatal so there was no cause for concern. The woman who tested positive for Zika is undergoing treatment and is in good health.


What to do to prevent Zika virus

There is currently no antivirus treatment or vaccine for the Zika virus. So the best way to avoid the Zika virus is to be careful not to be bitten by mosquitoes during the day.

The Zika virus is not fatal to the general public but can be fatal to pregnant women and children. The virus is transmitted to newborns by pregnant women and causes birth defects in children.
