This is the third election of Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation. Both of these previous elections saw a political compromise. Elections were held in 2011 after the Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation came into existence in 2010. Out of 33 seats in 11 wards, Congress got 18 and BJP 15 seats. Mahendrasinh Rana of the Congress took over as the first mayor of the city however before the end of his 2.5-year term he revolted and joined the BJP with 3 members and the corporation was taken over by the BJP. However, then the whole matter was also entangled in legal entanglements.
In the second election held in April 2016, both the parties got 16-16 seats out of 32 seats in 8 wards. This led to a tie but Praveen Patel of the Congress sided with the BJP and became the mayor. In the second consecutive election, the Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation split and the BJP came to power. If the BJP wins the third election this time with the hope of getting a majority, then Congress is also exercising to get a majority like in the 2011 elections.
